ToggleHow We Test Pillows
Our testing methodology explained. Every recommendation is backed by structured, hands-on evaluation.
Our Philosophy
We believe a pillow review is only as good as the testing behind it. That's why every pillow we recommend goes through a structured, multi-night evaluation process before it earns a score. We don't rely on first impressions, manufacturer specs, or rewritten product descriptions.
Testing Criteria
Each pillow is scored on a 100-point scale across eight weighted categories:
Testing Process
Every pillow goes through the same structured evaluation:
Night 1-2: Break-in period. New pillows need time to expand and off-gas. We allow a minimum 48-hour break-in before scoring begins. Initial impressions are noted but not factored into the final score.
Night 3-7: Primary testing. Each pillow is used for a minimum of five consecutive nights. Testers log comfort ratings, sleep quality, temperature observations, and any pain or discomfort each morning.
Day 8+: Analysis and scoring. Test logs are compiled, measurements are recorded, and final scores are calculated using our weighted criteria. Pillows are then compared against others in the same category.
Our Testing Panel
We test with a panel of five sleepers representing different body types, sleep positions, and preferences. This ensures our recommendations aren't skewed toward one type of sleeper. Panel members include side sleepers, back sleepers, combination sleepers, and individuals with specific concerns like neck pain or overheating.
Review Updates
We re-evaluate our recommendations on an ongoing basis. When manufacturers update products, when prices shift significantly, or when strong new competitors enter the market, we update our guides to reflect the current landscape. Every guide includes a "last updated" date so you know how recent our testing is.
What We Don't Do
We don't accept free pillows in exchange for reviews. We don't let brands pre-approve or edit our content. We don't adjust scores based on affiliate commission rates. And we don't publish reviews based solely on manufacturer specifications or other review sites. If we haven't tested it, we don't recommend it.
